What is a journey to wellness?
When you think of a journey you probably think of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of journey as “something suggesting travel or passage from one place to another.” If you consider your current health and what it will take to get to a healthy version of yourself, you can look at it as a journey.
Wellness is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.” And on Pfizer’s website they describe wellness as “The act of practicing health habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes-instead of surviving your striving.”
Where do you begin your journey to wellness?
New Expressions simply means to get different results or make changes in your health habits you must begin expressing new habits. Wanting to change but continuing to do the same things that got you to your current health state will not move you in the direction you want. Poor health does not happen overnight so understanding that the journey to wellness may not be a quick one, is important. However, the first step is to change your mind set and make a commitment to yourself to do the best you can each day to make and stick with the small changes. Begin with changing one poor habit at a time.
Here are some examples of small changes:
• Daily movement (if you sit at a desk all day-set a timer on your phone or watch to get up and move every hour for just a few minutes-walk stretch)
• Drinking more pure clean water working up to 40-64 ounces per day
• Going to bed earlier and decreasing your screen time (TV, phone, tablet) to get better quality sleep
• Eat more fruits and vegetables (non-GMO of course)
• Get out in nature and take some slow deep breathes to calm your mind and appreciate the beauty of it.
• Journal your thoughts (this can be a powerful tool)
• Spending quiet time in prayer or meditation to slow down your thoughts and connect with our Creator.
Making up your mind to change and focus on your health can seem overwhelming. No two people’s wellness journey is the same. There are so many factors that are involved in achieving or not achieving your goals and how quickly those goals are met. Emotions, environment, habits, stress level, family and social life, current and past health struggles, medications, food quality and genetics can all play a role in how our bodies respond along our health journey. What may be easy for one person may be a struggle for another because of these different factors.
